Van Gogh was born in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands, on March 30, 1853, to a family of art dealers and Protestant pastors. He was the eldest son of Theodorus van Gogh and Anna Cornelia Carbentus. Van Gogh was close to his younger brother Theo, who would later become his confidant and supporter throughout his artistic career. Van Gogh was moody and introverted as a child, and he struggled with his studies. He dropped out of school at the age of 15 and went on to work in a variety of jobs, including as an art dealer, a teacher, and a missionary. However, he was unsuccessful in all of these pursuits and struggled with alcoholism and depression.
