In 1880, van Gogh decided to become an artist, despite having no formal training. He moved to Brussels and studied art at the AcadŽmie Royale des Beaux-Arts, where he was exposed to the works of the French Impressionists. He began to develop his own style, characterized by bold colors and heavy brushstrokes. In 1886, van Gogh moved to Paris, where he became friends with artists such as Paul Gauguin, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Emile Bernard. He was exposed to new ideas and techniques, and his art began to flourish. He painted some of his most famous works during this period, including "The Starry Night" and "Irises." Despite his growing success, van Gogh's personal life remained troubled. He suffered from recurring bouts of depression and anxiety, and he had several episodes of mental breakdowns. In December 1888, he cut off part of his left ear in a fit of despair, and he spent time in a psychiatric hospital.
